At Council's extraordinary meeting on Monday 29 April which close to 100 residents attended, the Betts Brigade voted to continue the process to demolish the Boot Factory, despite well informed and expert testimonials supporting a comprehensive review of the current situation and conservation options.

Those who were there would have witnessed Crs Masselos, Wakefield, Strewe, and Wy Kanak present logical arguments in the face of hyperbole and scare tactics from the other councillors that demolition was the only option, even though the assessing Engineer clearly stated on the night that repair was an option.

The community were NOT consulted ...

The community were NOT consulted on this decision and documentation has only been provided after repeated requests from residents. Having read the reports, it is clear that there many examples of Council's failure to implement the engineer's recommendations. This negligence has lead to the deterioration of Boot Factory. But all is not lost... The National Trust strongly opposes this demolition and so should YOU!

Dear Malcolm, Gabrielle and Bruce,

I write to you regarding the imminent demolition planned for the last remaining heritage building in Waverley, the Boot Factory in Spring Street Bondi Junction. I am opposed to this rushed and unnecessary decision by Council which does not have the support of the National Trust.

Please consider this email a petition to you from me – and as such I request that you support the following:

1. The urgent listing of the Factory on the State Heritage List.

2. A comprehensive master plan of the Boot Factory building within the context of the surrounding Council-owned properties, involving highly reputable Heritage Engineers, architects, property and finance experts working together as a team to assess all restorative and adaptive re-use options available. Unfortunately this best practice approach has not been followed to date.

3. That Council does not pre-empt a Development Application by committing to demolition as this would put Council in a position where there is a conflict of interest where they are in fact  their own consent authority for their own proposal.

This is a rare piece of history, and the last example of factory architecture in the area, representing Bondi's history of manufacturing. This unique building will add value to adjacent properties by creating a greater diversity of possible uses.
